The AmeriCorps Member of the Month is an honor we award coaches who have gone above and beyond during their service. This honor is given in conjunction with the highly revered golden trophy award. Watch as Coach B. accepts these honors at what he calls his “new home,” Midvale Elementary.

Brendan Toohey, better known as “Coach B,” is a first year Corps Member who has proven himself to be a top notch Playworks superstar in just a few short weeks at Midvale. Here’s a little more about him:

What is your favorite playground game?

Soccer

What do you wish for the school year?

I want kids to learn to be respectful and inclusive with everyone! I want everyone to feel safe and brave, to smile, and to have fun at school!

What elementary school did you attend?

Thomas Prince School in Princeton, MA

Have you had any other volunteer/service-oriented experiences?

I’ve worked with kids coaching soccer in underserved communities. I was a Big Brother in the Big Brother Big Sister program. I’ve traveled internationally several times to South America to volunteer and work with kids in orphanages and daycare programs.

Tell us two fun facts about yourself!

I grew up competitively ski racing. I can recite all of the prepositions in the English language at once.

Anything else it would be helpful for us to know?

I love to make other people laugh, and consider it my job at all times. I pride myself on being as empathetic and optimistic as I can be every day! I love my family, Boston sports, and my dog, Mike.
