Strengthening a School Through Play

Coach Isaiah Marshall is changing lives at Weaver Elementary.

Playgrounds are the foundation of many important roles at schools. They are where friendships are formed, new games are played, and life-long skills are developed. On Weaver Elementary’s playground is Playworks Coach Isaiah Marshall. Known for his energy and authenticity, Isaiah is helping students and staff build connections that extend beyond recess.

For students like Otani, Coach Isaiah’s presence has been a game-changer. Knowing that Coach Isaiah would be there at recess became a huge motivator for Otani, encouraging him to show up to school regularly and stay engaged throughout the day. Recess with Playworks gave him a sense of purpose and connection that positively affected his classroom performance and social relationships. Now, Otani is part of Playworks’ Junior Coach Leadership Program, finding joy in leading others and engaging with his classmates in meaningful ways.

Creating a Positive School Culture

Isaiah’s impact at Weaver Elementary extends to the staff. Amere Watkins, the Associate Administrator, came to the school with experience working with older students at the middle and high school levels. In those roles, he utilized a more formal leadership and discipline strategy, but after several weeks in his new role, he realized he had to adjust his methods to more effectively connect with and gain respect from the students.

Watching Isaiah interact with the students, Mr. Watkins learned that kids respond well to playful ways to get their attention and positive reinforcement practices like high-fives. . With Isaiah’s support, he began incorporating play into his leadership approach, transforming his interactions with students. In almost no time at all, he was able to quickly gain the attention of 300 students to begin assemblies, built rapport and trust at his new school, all while having fun.

“Playworks has brought us all together, celebrating our different backgrounds,” Mr. Watkins shared.

This approach has created a positive school culture of mutual respect, and fosters inclusivity and understanding in every child.

Play as a Tool for Growth

Principal Jenny Parker has also witnessed Isaiah’s impact firsthand. Since partnering with Playworks, she’s noticed a visible change in her students’ enthusiasm for recess and how that excitement positively affects their entire school day.

For her, Isaiah is not just a recess coach; he’s a trusted partner in her students’ development, helping them practice skills that complement classroom learning. With his help, students have learned to navigate conflicts, build friendships, and return to the classroom more focused and ready to learn. She’s even seen her staff incorporate more play into their routines, adding joy and connection to the school day.

A Community of Support

Coach Isaiah Marshall’s work at Weaver Elementary exemplifies the power of Playworks to create a network that uplifts both students and staff. Through his mentorship, Isaiah has fostered a community where everyone feels valued and empowered, building relationships that extend well beyond the playground.

As Isaiah puts it, “My intention is to make the world a better place through play.”

And at Weaver Elementary, he’s doing just that, one game at a time.
