Playworks Durham just completed its second exciting season of our co-ed volleball leagues. We are very appreciative of our three host sites: Merrick Moore Elementary, WG Pearson Elementary, and Bethesda Elementary. More than 150 4th and 5th graders participated in the league, developing a love for volleyball and learning to respect the game, play hard, and have fun each league night.
It all started with a fun Volleyball Extravaganza at Lakewood Elementary, where students learned the basic skills of setting, passing and serving.
They also left with a better understanding of respecting their teammates and opponents and made new friends from the 15 participating schools, including 14 Durham Public Schools and Maureen Joy Charter.
By the end of the season, the athletes showed great improvement in their skills, hitting overhand serves and rallying the ball back and forth. Everyone played extremely hard, with some students even sliding after the ball. The excitement could be heard in all the cheers from the crowd! It was also great to see teachers and administration join parents in the crowd, displaying healthy school community. All of the fun could be seen in the big smiles, high fives and energetic cheers both during and after each game. Congratulations to all of our league participants. The fun will continue in a special league coming later.
