Playworks Durham’s AmeriCorps (AC) members has had a spring filled with service as they joined together each month to help the Durham community. Coach Allie Morse started the Spring of Service in February with the first project planned by a member: a rewarding day at the Animal Protection Society of Durham. Our six AC members were joined by the office staff to show the animals some love and a cleaner space to live.
The March service project allowed our coaches to go back to school and experience some interesting new cultures. The event was Merrick Moore Elementary’s Multicultural Festival, and project was planned by AC members Coach Crystal Massenburg and Coach Erica Savage.
Playworks coaches taught new games from different countries and showed off some fun dance moves, including the Wobble and Gangnam Style relays! All the children who participated in a final game got to take home an awesome jump rope prize.
Our April service project took place at the Hillcrest Living Center in Durham. AC members Coach Grant Weixel and Coach William Page planned a fun and interactive event where ACs played Bingo and visited with the residents. Our members brought many laughs and smiles to the residents’ faces as they were able to share stories and in some cases candy! Throughout the spring our Playworks AmeriCorps members did an excellent job of serving the community and should be very proud of all their hard work.
