Playworks Durham goes to Washington

  1. Updates

With the support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Playworks executive directors and coaches swarmed Capitol Hill in late February to talk with members of the Senate and House of Representatives.

Durham ED, Don Fowler, and Coach Cameron Sims spent time in the offices of Representative David Price, Senator Richard Burr and Senator Kay Hagan talking about how the power of play (and Playworks of course) is transforming school climate in schools in their home state.

Leading up to their visit to Capitol Hill, Don and Cameron went through a number of training sessions provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through their Connect program on how to engage with policymakers.

The Foundation provided additional training on storytelling and other ways to provide concise and interesting snapshots of our work when the group met in DC for the visits.  One of the main purposes of the meetings was to spread the word of the impact Playworks Coaches are having, on a daily basis, on the lives of the 7500 Durham children they serve every day.
The three leaders were invited to come to one of our school playgrounds in the near future, and the invitations were well-received!  Stay tuned…
