How to play this fun, simple game Iron Lungs

Kids with a lot of energy to release? Try starting your playtime with this silly game of running and yelling. Anyone can play and challenge themselves to get better each time until they say they have iron lungs. The Game of the Week is Iron Lungs!

Group Size: 

 Any size

Age Group: 

 Pre K-Grade 5

Length of Activity: 

 Under 10 minutes

Developmental Goal: 

 To develop lung capacity and breath control.

Equipment: 

 None

Before You Start: 
  • Have everyone line up (toes on the line).
  • Take a few deep breaths, blowing them out slowly as a group.
  • Remind everyone to be aware of each other while running and be careful not to touch others.

Set Up: 
Pick a long open space with a line on one side.

How To Play: 
  • Take turns having players run while they yell, as described:

    • Have the player take a deep breath then yell. As they are yelling, they run toward the other side of the space. When they are out of breath, they must freeze.
  • Once every player has take a turn, have everyone together yell and run again until they get to the other side of the playing space.
  • Alternately, you can have all players practice their iron lungs (run and yell) together both times.
