Playworks teamed up with 24 Hour Fitness on June 10, 2010, to participate in "Fit to Play Day." This day of service and training kicked-off with a two hour, fun and intensive PLAY training led by Playworks staff. Over 100 24 Hour Fitness staff members learned the basics of play philosophy, learning games and strategies to involve youth in safe and inclusive activities. For the second half of the day 24 Hour Fitness split into small groups to share their love of play on the yard with kids at 20 low-income elementary schools throughout Oakland. Kids were delighted to see a crew of 24 Hour Fitness staff leading games that were both inclusive and fun at their schools.
The feelings were definitely mutual for the 24 Hour Fitness volunteers stating: "It was an awesome experience." "The thoughts and philosophy really worked." "Inclusion was key." "I witnessed kids who otherwise would be overlooked in the games suddenly feel empowered and their self esteem was dramatically improved." Needless to say, Fit to Play Day was great success. More than 6,000 kids were positively impacted thanks to 24 Hour Fitness's commitment to a healthier community for youth!
An overwhelming 100% of 24 Hour Fitness participants surveyed said they would recommend this service and training to other corporations!
