Bump, Set… Serve! Volleyball Extravaganza focuses on sporting behavior

  1. Updates

Spring AND volleyballs are in the air in Chicago! Playworks Chicago's 2013 Boys & Girls Volleyball Extravaganza was a success, bringing in players from our partner schools across the city for a skills-building day that centered on our three group agreements: respecting the game, playing hard, and having fun!

Third and fourth grade students, most introduced to the game for the first time, participated in skills-building stations. The extravaganza was a safe, inclusive environment where players were taught how to bump, set and underhand serve so they would have the basic foundation to start their season. Learning the new skills, the students got a chance to meet fellow players and coaches from other Playworks partner schools. Our coaches were proud hat even in the short time working with the players, they could see an improvement in skills and a newly sparked interest in the sport of volleyball. The day ended with some rotation practice and the players got a sense of how to work as a team to get the ball back over the net!

Thank you to Rauner Family YMCA in Chicago's Little Village neighborhood for the use of the gorgeous and colorful state-of-the-art gym. And a big thanks to all the parents, friends, family members and volunteers who made the day a success for the students. The Playworks league events and games are a chance to bring together our suporters from across Chicago and strengthen community bonds within the city.
