Quarterback Training Camp
Large Group (10 and up)
Grades 3-5
Dodgeballs
Development Goal
To develop teamwork, cooperation, eye-hand coordination, and strategic thinking.
Before You Start
- Review how to throw a football.
- Review safe dodgeball throwing, always below the shoulders (below the waist is even safer).
Set Up
Place cones in a straight line. This line is the line of scrimmage. Place two dodgeballs on each side of the playing area — at the ends of the line of cones. Place five or more hula hoops on the ground close to increasing distances from the line of scrimmage. Place four footballs about five feet behind the line of scrimmage.
How to Play
- Have players form a single-file line.
- The first four players step out on defense. They line up on one either side of the field near the dodgeballs.
- The next five players step out and pick up the hula hoops. These five are the offensive “receivers”
- The next player is the quarterback, and should stand behind the cones, away from all other players, next to the footballs.
- On the leader’s start signal, the quarterback get four attemps to throw the footballs through the hula hoops being held up by the offensive players. When the ball is thrown, the hula hooper has three steps to try to help the ball through the hoop.
- While the quarterback throws, the four defensive players may attempt to hit the thrower with a dodgeball.
- The play is over when all four footballs/five dodgeballs have been thrown, or if the defense hits the quarterback with a dodgeball.
- If the quarterback successfully throws a ball into a hula hoop, the six offensive players (five with hula hoop and quarterback) stay on the field while the defense goes to the end of the line.
- If the quarterback is hit with a dodgeball or is unable to throw through a hoop, the offense goes to the end of the line and the defense stays.
Variations
- With fewer players, you could decrease number of defensive and offensive players.
- You could have one defensive player with dodgeballs, one quarterback with footballs, and one receiver with a hula hoop.
