Celebrating Play and Culture at Salt River Elementary

Play becomes a bridge between fun and tradition!

At Playworks, we’re thrilled to partner with Salt River Elementary, where the impact of play goes far beyond the playground. Located in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, this school is dedicated to honoring Piipash and O’odham culture, and together we’re blending those traditions into every recess, every interaction, every cheer. Play here isn’t just activity; it’s a meaningful part of the day, connecting students with each other and their heritage.

Each morning, students are greeted by more than just the usual sounds of play—they’re hearing Piipash and O’odham phrases, built into every part of their schoolday. Working closely with Salt River’s Culture Teacher, we incorporate these languages and cultural symbols directly into games and routines, making them a natural part of every child’s day. Kickball, for example, becomes a unique blend of movement and tradition, where students use phrases in Piipash around the bases and bring cultural stories into their play. It’s a powerful way to reinforce identity and community while having fun.

“There’s something absolutely awesome about watching students light up as they play in ways that celebrate who they are,” says Coach Julie, who has been working with Salt River Elementary this school year, “Seeing them connect through words and values they’re proud of really helps build a strong sense of community.”

This partnership helps create a space where play becomes a method to connect with cultural pride and community. With insights from community members, every game and activity is an opportunity for students to feel seen and celebrated. At Salt River Elementary, we’re not just playing; we’re supporting an environment where each child’s identity is woven into their school day, creating a joyful, inclusive community that honors every student. Together, Salt River Elementary and Playworks are excited to champion a culture of play that embraces every tradition and connection.
